Surely by now, you’ve heard of ‘superfoods’ right?
There are many different foods which people have been labelling as superfoods. However, there’s no proper scientific definition of what makes a superfood.
The general idea is that a superfood is an ingredient which is packed with more vitamins and nutrients than other foods, and offers more health benefits.
There are lots of different types of healthy foods out there, but there are a few which really stand out from the rest when it comes to their healthful properties, making it much easier to keep the body running properly and enhance your weight loss efforts.
For this reason, I’ve decided to compile a list of my top 10 favourite superfoods and the benefits which come along with them.
Let’s get into it.
Superfood #1: Hemp Seeds
Let’s start with a touchy subject, shall we? The Cannabis plant!
Hemp seeds are the seeds which come from the Cannabis plant, and they contain a small trace of THC (around 1%), which is the active ingredient in smokeable Marijuana.
Because of this, the benefits of hemp seeds were somewhat shunned for a long time.
It has been shown, however, that hemp seeds actually have a ton of medicinal benefits, and they contain 10-15 times less THC than smokeable marijuana – meaning that eating hemp seeds cannot get you high.
The good news is that they still offer plenty of the amazing benefits of this interesting plant.
Researchers from the University of Rostock in Germany carried out a study which showed that cannabinoids which were derived from hemp seeds played a significant role in inhibiting the growth of cancerous cells.
Hemp seeds can also lower your LDL cholesterol (the bad type) and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. They also lower your blood pressure and increase your HDL cholesterol (the good type). Talk about a superfood!
Furthermore, they have amazing anti-arthritic properties and can greatly help patients suffering such symptoms. For treatment, take one tablespoon of hemp seed oil daily, along with a quality fish oil supplement.
Superfood #2: Chili Peppers
Chili peppers, such as Cayenne Pepper, have been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels, and the aggregation of platelets in the blood.
They also enhance the body’s ability to dissolve fibrin, a substance which plays a major role in the formation of blood clots.
If you look into cultures which traditionally use a lot of hot peppers, you’ll find that they have a significantly lower rate of heart disease!
Superfood #3: Eggs
People underestimate eggs, simply because they’re such a common food.
Eggs, however, are one of the most nutrient-rich foods on the entire planet, and everybody should be eating them!
Both the egg white and the yolk are extremely rich in nutrients.
The yolk contains a variety of different vitamins and minerals which keep our bodies ticking over nicely. It also contains good cholesterol and essential fatty acids.
The egg white is an amazing source of protein. It’s actually considered the most ‘complete’ source of protein, as they contain all eight of the essential amino acids which we must obtain through our diet – the body cannot produce them by itself.
Eggs contain good amounts of Vitamins A, B6, B12, D, E and K – making them a superfood which you simply should not go without!
Superfood #4: Grapefruit
Grapefruit is a fantastic source of Vitamin C, and over 20 studies have shown that grapefruit can reduce both the chances of catching a cold and the severity of cold symptoms.
They also help prevent free radicals, which trigger inflammation within the body and can lead to asthma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Free radicals can also oxidize cholesterol and eventually lead to heart attacks. Grapefruits have been proven to prevent this process from occurring.
And if that’s not enough to classify it as a superfood, pink and red types of grapefruit (not white) are actually this colour due to a compound called lycopene, a carotenoid phytonutrient.
Lycopene appears to have anti-tumour properties, helps prevent cell damage, and has actually been proven by studies to significantly reduce the risk of men developing prostate cancer!
Superfood #5: Avocado
The avocado is a very peculiar type of fruit.
Reason being, most fruits are made of carbohydrates, while the avocado is made up primarily of healthy fats.
Hundreds of studies have shown that avocado has very powerful beneficial effects on the body.
Firstly, they contain more potassium than bananas, and potassium is an important nutrient which most people are lacking.
Studies show that an adequate intake of potassium can support healthy blood pressure levels, resulting in less risk of cardiovascular disease and kidney failure.
The majority of the healthy fat within the avocado is called oleic acid. This is a fatty acid which is responsible for various different beneficial health effects. It’s been linked to reducing inflammation and has been shown to have positive effects on cancerous cells.
On top of all of this, they’re packed with fibre.
Fibre can contribute to weight loss, lower blood sugar levels, and is linked to a lower likelihood of developing many different diseases.
Overall, this superfood is extremely beneficial for blood pressure, weight loss and metabolic health.
Superfood #6: Dark Chocolate
Who’d have thought I’d put chocolate on this list?!
Milk chocolate and white chocolate (the sugary types) are generally bad for overall health but fortunately for us chocolate lovers, dark chocolate absolutely qualifies as a superfood and it has a bunch of positive health properties.
Dark chocolate is made from the seed of the cocoa tree, which is one of the best sources of antioxidants in existence.
One study showed that 5 days of consuming cocoa improved blood flow to the brain. It also helped significantly to improve cognitive function in elderly people, and improved verbal fluency.
This could be due to the caffeine and theobromine content, which are stimulants which positively affect short-term brain function.
It also contains a decent amount of fibre, and is loaded with high amounts of super-healthy minerals including Iron, Magnesium, Copper, Potassium, Zinc and many more!
Not just in small amounts either – a 100g bar of dark chocolate can contain between 60-80% of your RDA for the minerals I just listed!
That doesn’t mean we should be eating 100g though – that’s quite a lot, and it’s still quite high in calories. However, a square or two after dinner will definitely do more good than harm.
Superfood #7: Blueberries
Blueberries are a great all-round superfood. They are great for combating ageing – keeping father time at bay! They help the body defend itself against pathogens which cause damage to our bodies over time.
They’re high in antioxidants across the board, but they contain an especially large amount of proanthocyanidins (try and say that one first time!) which have been observed in various animal studies to reduce the effects of ageing.
They also boost brain function, protect our brains from degeneration, and improve our focus and memory (other foods which have these effects are cashews, hazelnuts, mangos, strawberries and green tea).
Lastly, blueberries also help support digestion, which can help regulate your gastrointestinal track – just by eating a small portion each day.
Superfood #8: Ginger
Ginger is a massively underutilised superfood which can be used to combat various different forms of nausea, especially morning sickness.
It has been used for years and years as a sickness remedy, and evidence has shown that in some cases, it can be as effective than prescription medication.
12 studies involving a total of 1,278 pregnant women showed that just 1.5 grams of ginger significantly lowered symptoms of nausea.
Ginger can also reduce muscle pain and soreness after working out. It doesn’t have an immediate effect, but it definitely helps long term due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
It appears also to be effective when it comes to reducing menstrual pain. A study of 150 women showed that just 1 gram of ginger per day had significant pain-relieving effects, comparable to that of ibuprofen.
It has also been used as an alternative treatment to various different forms of cancer.
This is due to gingerol, a substance found in raw ginger which may have protective effects against the growth of abnormal cells.
Get some ginger on your diet, guys! You can find an awesome drink which contains ginger in the article I’ve written regarding my favourite detox water recipes.
Superfood #9: Green Tea
I’ve written an article about the benefits of green tea already so I won’t elaborate too much on this one.
However, green tea is an amazing drink for weight loss, due to its low-calorie properties and high ECGC content.
It also prevents brain function, reduces the risk of cancer, and drastically cuts down our risk of cardiovascular disease.
Green tea can also have astonishing long-term effects on the brain, and has been shown to reduce our chances of developing both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease!
It’s something which absolutely everybody should be either drinking or supplementing with. It’s super cheap and is SO worth it. You can grab the ones I use here if you’d like.
Superfood #10: Bell Peppers
Bell peppers are loaded with nutrients, and they’re low in calories, making them an awesome superfood for anybody who wants to lose weight.
A full cup of peppers would give you your entire daily recommended allowance of Vitamin A and C while totalling to just 45 calories! That’s less than one digestive biscuit!
They’re also high in Vitamin E, which is known to play a major role in keeping your hair and nails nice and healthy, and skin looking clear and youthful!
And there we have it!
Those are my top 10 superfoods. I’ve included quite a variety of different foods, as opposed to similar foods, in order to give you a little more flexibility when choosing which ones you’d like to implement into your diet.
Start putting a few of these superfoods into your meals and see how much healthier you feel!
